Available 24/7 to Fight on Your Behalf

Boating is a popular pastime for many people. Unfortunately, when boat operators don’t pay attention to their passengers or surroundings, serious accidents can occur. In fact, operator inattention is the leading cause of boating accidents. In 2019 approximately 613 people died from boating accident related injuries in the United States. Additionally, boat operators under the influence of alcohol are the leading factor in fatal boating accidents. I am a Lynchburg boating accident attorney and represent clients that have been in boating accidents for both personal injury and property damage.

Common Causes of Boating Accidents

Boating carries with it many risks. In an accident, many factors are often present and require a skilled lawyer to sift through the evidence and determine who is liable for any ensuing injuries. When a client retains me for a boating accident I do a diligent investigation into the matter. Boats present their own unique set of circumstances when dealing with a negligence case. Boating and right of way laws are not the same as they are on the land. A dedicated boating accident attorney will pursue your rights after an accident.

Boating accidents can be caused by the following:

  • Drunk boat operation
  • Collision with unmarked rocks
  • Slip and falls on docks, ramps & ladders
  • Boat equipment malfunctions
  • Individuals caught in tow lines
  • Swimmers injured by propeller

At Attorney Chris White will thoroughly investigate the details surrounding your claim and help you fight for the just compensation that you may be entitled to. An injury can have a life long effect and be permanent. Some brain injuries do not even manifest themselves until years after an accident. I highly suggest you have a dedicated personal injury lawyer review your case.

Boating Accidents in America:

Recent statistics from a 2022 United States Coast Guard study shows that "The fatality rate was 5.4 deaths per 100,000 registered recreational vessels.  This rate represents a 1.8 percent decrease from last year’s fatality rate of 5.5 deaths per 100,000 registered recreational vessels."  Therefore, the waterways are becoming safer.

Important note should be made that "Where the cause of death was known, 75 percent of fatal boating incident victims drowned. Of those drowning victims with reported life jacket usage, 85 percent were not wearing a life jacket." It is best to always wear a coast guard approved life jacket.

Always stay vigilant as most accidents occured in good weather, calm winds, steady seas and clear visibility.
